Milwaukee Made Marina Who She Is

Marina is a Milwaukee native and has been serving our community her entire adult life as a community organizer and elected official.

She and her husband Eduardo, an immigrant from Uruguay, live in the heart of Bay View with their children: Lucia, Rafael, and Zoe.

First elected in 2004 as the youngest woman to ever be elected to the Milwaukee County Board, Marina was re-elected four times, ultimately serving as the Chairwoman of the board. Now, she serves as Alderwoman for District 14, one of Milwaukee’s most diverse and vibrant neighborhoods.

Marina is helping chart a new progressive future for Milwaukee through her passion for organizing and her ability to write and pass legislation that can make a real difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors.

Marina’s Story is a Milwaukee Story

A daughter of an immigrant from Serbia, Marina’s family set down their roots in Milwaukee because they knew they could build a successful life here.

She’s a proud product of Milwaukee’s public schools — Marina graduated from Bay View High School, received her bachelor’s degree from Marquette University and her master’s degree from UW-Milwaukee. (Who said Golden Eagles and Panthers can’t get along?!)

It was her Milwaukee upbringing that called her to public service — and on top of her service on the Milwaukee County Board and as an Alderwoman, Marina is an active member of Bay View Neighborhood Association, Friends of South Shore Park, Bay View Historical Society, Bay View Lions Club, Humboldt Park Friends, and other community groups.

In addition to this service, her deepest responsibility will always be to her family. Being a mom to two young kids, she is passionate about creating a Milwaukee where everyone will be able to prosper and succeed.

When Marina is able to find some free time outside of her public service, she enjoys exploring Milwaukee’s parks, walking on the lakeshore, dining at our amazing restaurants, or catching a Bucks game downtown.

Marina’s Public Service and Accomplishments

Marina has the distinction of being the youngest woman ever elected County Supervisor when she took office in 2004 at the age of 22. She was subsequently re-elected to the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2018. On April 16, 2012, she was elected by her peers to serve as Chairwoman of the County Board of Supervisors. She is the youngest person in the history of Milwaukee County — and only the second woman — to hold that office. Her last County Board meeting as Chairwoman was in July of 2015, as she decided to return to her supervisory role and continue her work in the community. She went on to lead the Working Families Party as their Executive Director. In 2020, she was elected to Milwaukee’s Common Council, helping make history as part of the largest female class ever to serve our city.

Since being elected to office, Marina has fought energetically on legislative issues that help the community she was born and raised in and now represents.

Her legislative agenda has been focused on supporting the needs of working families, adopting higher energy and environmental standards in Milwaukee County, and passing a socially and fiscally responsible budget each year.

She has had legislative victories in the areas of equality, public transit, fair housing, food sustainability, and environmental protection. Marina’s elected focus is her district where she has successfully secured county funding to make major improvements in the parks.

Perhaps most well known for her dedication to enhancing South Shore Park, Supervisor Dimitrijevic has led the way on the reconstruction of the parking lot and opening of the public South Shore Terrace. In Pulaski Park, she worked to remodel the pavilion and construct new futsal courts for all to enjoy. She worked alongside neighbors to build a community garden in Bay View and partnered with the city to open up the city-county dog park.

Along with holding over 100 town hall meetings throughout her elected career, she has also visited each of the 19 communities in Milwaukee County by bus. She was named Bay View Person of the Year and has consistently been named the, “Best Milwaukee County Supervisor” by the readers of the Shepherd Express newspaper.
